I am new to your site but from what I have seen so far your answers have been very helpful. My question is what price should I pay or stay around for a 1 ct ideal cut Princess cut diamond G/H color SI1/SI2 clarity with an GIA/AGS cert and 1 with EGL/IGI cert? Also what price should I pay or stay around for a 1 ct ideal cut Princess cut diamond with E/F color Vs2 clarity with an GIA/AGS cert and 1 with EGL/IGI cert? Diamond would be set in basic 18k white gold band. Thanks in advance for your help.
You should pay no money for any diamond except GIA certified. AGS/IGI might be a drop cheaper, but that will only be because of an upgrade in color. EGL is borderline fraudulent. You shouldn’t buy from a retailer that has such a lack of integrity to show them.
Here are two beautiful diamonds (well cut as well, which is the most important aspect of a diamond).
And here is an F VS2 though we feel that is a huge waste of money:
What do you think?
I appreciate the advice you have given and also some options that are available. May I ask you why you feel the F/VS2 is a waste of money? Do you mean the color/clarity together is a waste of money or that specific stone shown in pic is. If you don’t mind letting me know what your thoughts are on that I will appreciate it because I have looked at a few stones and I was leaning towards a 1.00 GIA cert F/VS2. Thanks again for help on this.
You should read our posts on color and clarity.

The movie on those pages is great. The fact is, 99% of people can’t see the difference between an F and an H (especially once the diamond is set in a ring). Also once a diamond is eye-clean its eye-clean. It doesn’t matter if its an SI2 or a VVS2. The vast majority of SI2s are not eye-clean, but if it is, who cares what the paper says?
Thank you so much for your help Mike. The information you’ve given me has helped me tremendously. I have narrowed it down to 2 stones. 1 is at a b&m store here in my town ” 1.00 Carat F-VS2 GIA Cert Table:73% Depth 79% 561x514x406 not sure about the symmetry and polish but there is no fluorescent and it is for 4000.00 and it also includes a 14k white gold tiffany style solitaire setting for free ( apparenty they offer this setting to anyone that buys a stone from them and would like the solitaire setting). Before speaking with you in the beginning of this week I went into the store and decided on a J-SI1 1.00 carat IGI cert stone which went for 4700.00 and put a deposit down but after speaking with you I asked them to cancel my order and told them that I found a stone on the James Allen website I have decided to go with but they wanted my business and found me this diamond 1.00 Carat F-VS2 GIA Cert Table:73% Depth 79% 561x514x406 for 4000.00 the prices was originally listed for 6900.00 they have shipped it from one of their other stores on the East coast and it should be arriving tomorrow for me to look at. I know that in your article you state that a good diamonds table and depth should stay under 75% is this stone a stone that is not good at all and I should stay away from this 1? The other is from James Allen “1.04 Carat G-VS1 Princess Cut Diamond / SKU: 96697” price is 4100.00. between these 2 stones which would you go with if either? Thanks again for all your help.
I’m sorry, but that cut is horrific. It should be 69-73 and NEVER be higher than 75%. This local jeweler either knows nothing about diamonds or completely lacks integrity.
I appreciate your input Mike. If you don’t mind me asking you 1 more question would you be able to recommend me a few great 1.00 ct princess cut stone in the price range of 3500 to 4000 with the color and clarity of stone up to you. If possible I would like for it to be eye clean and colorless or as close to colorless as possible. Just trying to see if I can get greater value in a 1.oo ct stone with a lower color and clarity for a cheaper price. Thanks
I would recommend one of these:
The first one is a great value.
