Q&A: “Aiming for a 1 Carat within a $4500 Budget”

By Mike Fried,

I really appreciate your website and am looking for some suggestions. Aiming for a 1 carat within a $4500 budget, but am not exactly sure if that is very realistic without sacrificing clarity or color. I have spent literally a few sold hours over the past week looking at different diamonds on James Allens website but now my head is starting to hurt. Most important to me is that the diamond is eye clean. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and I look forward to hearing from you.

What shape are you looking for and what kind of setting will it be going into?

Rounds cut going on a solitaire, six prong basket setting.

…….

To maybe help you out a bit more and to see if I am on the right track, the list below reflects some of the options I’m considuring.

The latter of the 5 do not have actual pictures so I am going off of the GIA report:

Thanks again

White gold or yellow gold?

Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it, you guys truly offer a great service!

Now for a hard question, wich of the two larger ones do you think is a better diamond?

Did you have a chance to look at the 5 options I sent you?

I prefer this one: https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI2-Excellent-Cut-Round-Diamond-1513081.asp

I looked at the others. In general, I prefer to stay away from VG cuts if possible so that was most of them. Also, no need to go down to a K color.

The 1.04 J SI1 won’t be eye clean. This stone, though:

https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-SI1-Excellent-Cut-Round-Diamond-1516516.asp

is REALLY nice. And the truth is, if it’s going into a solitaire, it just might be a better choice than my I SI2 (at least in terms of value).

Ok thanks a lot. I’m having a really hard time deciding between the two though.

🙁

I would go for the 1.04 J SI1.

Sorry I’m kind of cunfused now. . . from the previous email you said the 1.04 J SI1 won’t be eye clean?

You’re right. I meant the 2nd one in my previous email. The one you originally linked to.

OK thats what I was thinking but just wanted to confirm, like I’ve maybe over stated I do really value your opinion.

Do you accept tips in any way?

What is your gain for offering all this help?

…….

Just talked to a lady at James allen, she also recommended this one.

https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VS1-Excellent-Cut-Round-Diamond-1516316.asp

She suggested having one of thier in house gemologists compare the three and will get back to me in a few days.

I’m not sure about the strong blue fluoresence of the above diamond, seeing how some opinions say it is a good thing in regards to diamonds in the G-J color range, while othere’s say it’s a bad thing.

What’s your opinion?

It can definitely be a good thing. See my flr article: /education/fluorescence/
