I was looking at purchasing diamond stud earrings. The certification is listed as GIS. I reached out to the seller who advised it’s just another certification company but after researching it, I cannot find GIS at all. Any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I don’t want to get taken for a ride. Thank you.
The most accurate grading labs in the diamond industry are GIA and AGS. Whatever GIS is, it’s not legitimate and there’s no way for anybody to know what the real grades are and what’s the real value of the diamonds. I would definitely stay away.
Thank you for your response. I was looking for round diamond stud earrings. The studs I found was one carat, .5 each stud, rated D&VS, $982 after haggling with them but after your response I’m not purchasing them. If you can assist me with this, I would appreciate it. I’m good with either up to a carat or .5 but I don’t want to spend a fortune, $500-$1,000 range. This is for my wife’s birthday next week.
Unfortunately, I didn’t find any 0.5-1tcw certified pairs for up to $1,000 that could be shipped so quickly. The largest decent pairs I found were these two preset earrings from Blue Nile:
Diamond Stud Earrings in 14k White Gold (1/2 ct. tw.)
Diamond Stud Earrings in 14k White Gold (3/4 ct. tw.)
Even though they are not certified, the quality of the diamonds would be excellent. The cuts are uniform and the diamonds are always white and eye-clean. Whenever Mike has tested companies for pre-made jewelry (be it studs, pendants or fashion jewelry), Blue Nile’s quality has always been on top.
I did check out the diamonds. I do like them and was even looking at up to a carat with either white gold or platinum. How do you view platinum versus white gold and diamond size? I’m going by what you said about the companies quality but one question comes to mind, any ideas as to why the company doesn’t certify their diamonds through a reputable company? If you were purchasing these, would them not being certified be a detriment to you purchasing them?
We don’t think there’s much of a visual/quality difference between white gold and platinum, so we don’t think it makes sense to spend so much on platinum. The size of the diamonds doesn’t play any role here. https://www.diamonds.pro/jewelry-precious-metals/
Diamonds in preset jewelry are usually not certified, especially if they are under a carat. This allows the vendor to keep the price in the lower range. That’s why it’s important to know that the company is reputable and sells high-quality products so that it’s not risky to buy something without certification. I’m, of course, happy to find for you two loose stones with certification, but the price would be much higher than your budget.
I did place an order from Blue Nile. Will keep you in mind for any future purchases. Thanks for your help.
That’s fantastic news! I’m glad I could help you.
