Hello,
I’m looking to buy an engagement ring for, hopefully, my fiancee to be. I nearly went to Tiffany to buy a ring before I thought I’d do some more research and came across your site.
I’ve been on it for the whole day and have checked out Ringo, then AI assistant.
I understand that it’s offering lower colour grades but larger carat because the colour grades aren’t perceivable to the naked eye.
Strangely, when I’ve been to the shops to look at the different cuts and colour grades I can see the colour differences with my naked eye, albeit just about.
To be honest, I’ve got my eye on this diamond www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.96-carat-d-color-if-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-6087448?a_aid=dmnd1357 because I feel like a D grade colour feels right. It would be a quality ring that can be passed down, if I ever have children… I don’t know – I hope this all makes sense?
Thank you for your time and I hope you can help me. The website is brilliant and very educational!
When you went into the stores were the diamonds certified by the GIA lab? Because if not, then you never know whether the diamonds really matched the quality claims. For instance, when you see a diamond with an EGL certificate claiming its G, its anywhere from an I to a KL color. So it’s important to know if you’re comparing apples to apples.

This diamond you found is beautiful, I like it a lot. Great find!
Thanks for getting back in touch.
So I remember the Tiffany engagement rings that were shown to me, which they claim had excellent cut, between F-D colours, and VS1 and above clarity.
Additionally, I’ve widen my search to the following:
Cut: Ideal/Excellent
Colour: F, E, D
Clarity: VVS1
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
My line of thought, I figured that even if I go for a D colour with IF/FL clarity the resale value won’t be great and they will have a high depreciation?
Thank you for the additional information. Widening your search was definitely a good idea, lower grades are a much better value and look identical to the highest ones. And it’s exactly as you say, diamonds do lose their value, even D IF ones. That’s why we think you should get the best value now (by going with slightly lower grades). It’ll still be a beautiful family heirloom 🙂
If you want to pay more for something that would make the diamond really stand out, it should be the cut. That’s the most important aspect of a diamond, it’s what makes it beautiful and brilliant. Have you heard about Brian Gavin and their extremely brilliant diamonds? They are the creme de la creme in the diamond world: https://www.diamonds.pro/reviews/brian-gavin/
Look at these diamonds:

They are absolutely stunning and would look colorless in any setting you choose. And they’ll have a lot of added brilliance and fire.
Sorry for the late reply. I’ve actually already proposed to my girlfriend with a promise ring and she said yes, thankfully! I’m now looking for the right diamond for her too.
I think the Brian Gavin diamond looks amazing but maybe out of my price range. I am particular impressed with the F colour VVS2, I think that’s the one I’ll go for.
Many thanks!
My pleasure.
