Q&A: Choosing a 1 Ct. Princess Cut Diamond for $4500 Budget

By Mike Fried,

Hi, I am looking to purchase an engagement ring for my girlfriend. We have spent a lot of time looking at rings together and I have a good idea what she is after.

The setting I have chosen is this one:

Either in the 14k or the 18k I have not decided yet.

As for the diamond I am unsure what to choose. I am looking for a minimum size around 1ct. and my budget is for the diamond alone is about $4500. For your information my partner’s finger size is a 5.25.

Can you suggest a few diamonds which you would recommend. Small inclusions don’t bother my partner as long as the diamond has the sparkle!

Thanks in advance.

What shape do you want?

I am looking for a princess cut.

Here are a couple of diamonds I really like for you:

I really like that first one. If you want the second one, ask JA to upload the cert asap.

Thanks very much for that. What are the main differences between them. I mean what would make me choose one of them over the other?

Thanks in advance for all your help again.

The depth% is the difference. 64% is on the low end of the ‘ideal’ range. That means it may not be as brilliant as the first one. On the flip side, it will look much larger. Your eye sees the ‘face’ of the diamond, not the weight, so this one will have bigger length and width measurements. If it were a 67/68% I’d say go for it. But 64 is just a bit to shallow for me.

Thanks very much for that, that explains so much.

Can I please ask that you also recommend a diamond under $4000 just to get an idea of what I would be able to get in that price range. I am buying from Australia so that first diamond comes out to over $6000 which is a little more than I would like to pay. Can you recommend me something for the diamond between $3500 and $4000 that would be great. Sorry if I am asking too much.

You are right on the bubble when it comes to size. I would need to drop down to 0.90ct for that. Are you ok with that?

Thanks, I don’t think so my partner really wants a 1ct.so I might just have to pony up the extra cash. Thanks again.

Thanks, so there is no issue going to a color I in a pave setting?

It’s cheating a little, but I’ve recommended plenty of I colors for that setting and its been fine. The cut is fantastic on it, so that makes up for it.

Yeah I really love the size and cut on that diamond thanks very much I think that may be the one!

Sounds great. Let me know how it looks when it arrives.
