Hello,
I just wanted to reach out and get some confirmation before purchasing a diamond. I have done some research and I am hoping on purchasing the diamond below:
I am purchasing an all gold setting and having prongs changed to gold too. Would it be noticeable if I got a K color vs J color diamond in an all gold setting? I was also wondering if I should be focusing on fluorescence or depth and table % or if all of this should be fine with an ideal cut.
Carat is the most important factor to my significant other as well, would there be a huge difference between a J color 1.4 carat and K color 1.5? My budget is roughly 9k Canadian dollars.
Unless your SO is extremely color sensitive, I wouldn’t worry about going with a K color, especially since you’re using an all gold setting. It might be an issue only if you went with a diamond wedding band or if the diamond got compared to others with higher grades.
Strong fluorescence is a good call on K as it might help it look a tad whiter. The diamond you sent me is very nice, I like it a lot. Typically, I try avoiding 60% tables, but in this particular case, the table and depth % work together very well so it wouldn’t be an issue.
Size-wise, nobody usually knows what a 1.5ct diamond is supposed to look like and the difference between a 1.4 and a 1.5ct is negligible. It also depends on how each diamond is cut. Some 1.4cts are on the larger side and look basically the same as 1.5ct and vice versa.
Thank you for taking the time to respond to my questions.
My last question is that on Blue Nile, they have some diamonds that you will not able to view in full 360 magnification. Would you consider that buying this diamond below (first link) even though the image is just a picture? It is a 1.42 carat K color but has no fluorescence but is significantly cheaper than the first diamond I sent to you. The second link is a J color for roughly the same price as the first diamond I sent to you but the shipping is slightly more delayed and it is a SI2 so I was wondering if this would be a better diamond overall/ eye clean or if the color difference is negligible.
For a VVS2 diamond, having no picture is not an issue. The clarity grade is high enough and I can see that there are no worrisome inclusions in the clarity plot. But I’m not a huge fan of the cut on that diamond, it’s very shallow which might cause worse light refraction.
The J SI2 is unfortunately really poorly cut, the table % and the crown and pavilion angles are off. I wouldn’t recommend it.
The first diamond I sent to you is unfortunately not available now. Would you be able to make some recommendations?
I found these two beautifully cut stones that would have a lot of added brilliance and fire. They are a tad lower in carats, but make it up with the perfect cut:
Blue Nile LD13637055
Blue Nile LD13694426
I have put the 1.31 carat on hold and will hopefully be purchasing this one soon. I also do trust your expertise and everything I have read has said to prioritize the cut of the diamond over the other 3 c’s.
Thank you again for your help!
The 1.31ct is an excellent choice. Its cut parameters are within the proper range and medium fluorescence is a bit of a bonus there, it would whiten the appearance of the diamond.
I’m glad I could help you.
