Q&A: Choosing a Marquise Cut Diamond with Around $1,400 Budget

By Mike Fried,

Hi, I’m just wondering whether I should go for a SI1 marquise diamond or higher, it would be between 0.6- 0.7 cts. I’m worried I will see the inclusions.

If the SI diamond is eye-clean, then sure!

What style setting (solitaire, pave/side stones/halo) and metal (yellow/white gold, platinum) are you going to put it in?

I’ve actually found one on Blue Nile, a marquise F colour, IF clarity, I just wish the carat was higher (it’s 0.54) however the length is 8.5 by 4.34 so it isn’t tiny in size, the other bits are good as well, it’s this one

Would you say this is good value?

It’s not a bad diamond, but you’re paying for the high color and clarity.

If you’re going for the size, there are others that are even larger and still cost less:

Yes that’s true however the one in the link only has ‘good’ symmetry, I’ve read that symmetry is very important for a marquise, also the L/W ratio isn’t great, meaning it looks too skinny, what are your thoughts?

The L/W ratio depends on what people like. Some people like the skinny look, some people like the more chubby ones.

The one you chose looks great and if it’s the shape you like, go for it. I also found this one, but it still might be a bit too long for you, am I right?

I love that one! I will send the link to my partner and if he buys it for me I will let you know.

Are there any other UK based online sites you would recommend?

Blue Nile LD11024194 – I’ve also found this one, lower clarity and colour than the first one I linked but a bit bigger, do you think you could tell the difference in terms of sparkle and fire between the two? The more I think about it that is the thing that is most important to me… how much it sparkles.

I like that one as well. I’d say that the last one you found (LD11024194) and the last one I recommended (LD11274702) are the top two options.

Blue Nile is the only company in Europe we found so far that has great service, prices and policies.

Thank you so much for your help!
