Q&A: Choosing a Round Diamond for a White Gold or Platinum Setting With a $5-7.5k Budget

By Mike Fried,

Hello,

Thank you for the information, I’ve used your proportions to select the right diamond but I am having a hard time narrowing down the right one based on color and clarity.

My budget is 5,000 and I want the absolute best I can buy with that. Also, the setting I chose originally was locked to a diamond that weighs 0.80 at maximum. I can special order it to buy the diamond of 1ct I was looking for. However my question is, is there such a thing as a diamond that is too big for its setting? Will an 0.80ct diamond be enough for this setting and potentially save me 2,000 dollars?

Monique Lhuillier Twisting Vine Diamond Engagement Ring in Platinum is the setting and this is a couple of the diamonds I was looking at:

Blue Nile LD14697042
Blue Nile LD12760641
Blue Nile LD14891650
Blue Nile LD14872436
Blue Nile LD14188115
Blue Nile LD14886757

Unfortunately, I can’t really answer your question about size as it’s entirely subjective. For some people, even a 0.5ct diamond would be too large while others might complain that a 3ct is too small.

As for the diamonds you sent me, I would exclude these: Blue Nile LD12760641 (it has knot), Blue Nile LD14891650, Blue Nile LD14872436 (they have a cavity), Blue Nile LD14886757 (strong fluorescence might make it look hazy).

My favorite is this one: Blue Nile LD14697042, it’s beautifully cut and would be very brilliant.

Awesome!

I want the most beautiful brilliant diamond I can find. My goal is a 1ct diamond with a budget of $5k. I was worried about the yellow tint of an I color diamond but didn’t know if I had just seen some bad ones or if it was truly worth upping my budget to accommodate and H or above. If you think I have a winner with that one then I’ll go for it.

The setting you’ve chosen has H color melee diamonds (that aren’t even certified) so an I color center stone is perfectly fine, there wouldn’t be any yellow hue.

The diamond Blue Nile LD14697042 is gorgeous, go for it! It’ll make an amazing ring.

After a few issues, I’ve had to select everything again. My new setting is this one: ZAC Zac Posen Floral Halo Diamond Engagement Ring

My new budget for the diamond is $7,500. How good are these diamonds?
Blue Nile LD14873125
Blue Nile LD14047235

Is there a noticeable difference between say a 1.2ct diamond and a 1.4ct diamond?

I wouldn’t recommend the first diamond you sent me as it has a knot and that’s a big problem on SI stones. The other one, Blue Nile LD14047235 is gorgeous, it’s a beautiful option. Sure, there’s a difference in size, but it would be noticeable only if you put the diamonds side by side. Also, halo settings are designed to make the center stone look larger so even if you went with a smaller diamond, it would still look impressive in the ring.

I found this beautiful 1.23ct:
Blue Nile LD14637254

Thank you so much, I went ahead with the 1.23ct one you found.

Much appreciated and a relief to be done.

That’s great news! I’m glad you liked my suggestion so much. It was an excellent option.
