Hi!
I used your service the last time I bought an engagement ring and you guys were extremely helpful, and I am now in the market for another one.
I’m looking for a ~2ct. oval diamond, ratio of 1.4-45, slim gold band with gold prongs. Don’t have a specific request on clarity or color but have read your guides extensively and will lean on your expertise – budget is around ~$17k.
Welcome back!
What about these diamonds?

And I found two settings you might like:
14K Yellow Gold Classic Split Shank Solitaire Diamond Engagement Ring
14K Yellow Gold Claw Prong Solitaire Engagement Ring (Flush Fit)
The second one has white gold prongs, which is the case for most settings, so I’m not sure if you’d like that.
Is there a little bit of bowtie effect in the James Allen diamond? And does the James Allen diamond also have a slightly yellower color? I believe she prefers gold prongs like you see in the first setting you sent – if that’s the case would any color difference be noticeable?
As for the bow tie, the JA one has a slight one. Every oval has one, it just depends on how strong it is.
An H color diamond won’t look yellowish in any setting (no matter what metal the setting is made from).
How much does fluorescence matter? The lady on the JA site mentioned that with fluorescence and a yellow band it would make the diamond look more white – is that true?
How much do the table and depth proportions matter when it comes to sparkle?
Fluorescence can help a diamond to look whiter, but you have to be careful there. Strong fluorescence usually causes a hazy/milky look on D-I colors. It’s risky to purchase a stone with strong fluorescence if you can’t see it in person first. On the other hand, a medium fluorescence and an H or I color diamond is a benefit (that’s the case that makes the diamond looks a bit whiter).
Depth and Table are important but not as much as they are with other shapes. Ovals of a depth of 68% are absolutely fine. Just keep it it below 74% and you’ll get a nice diamond.
Thanks! In your opinion, is there a reason I shouldn’t go with 10357187 over 10356780 at $2,300 cheaper?
I definitely recommend getting the less expensive one: www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/oval-cut/2.01-carat-h-color-si1-clarity-sku-10357187?a_aid=dmnd1357
It’s my favorite one. The symmetry is perfect on that one.
If it was up to me, I’d go with this one.
I’ll go with that one then.
Thank you so much!
You’re very welcome.
