Q&A: Help Finding a 2.70 Ct. Round Diamond for a White Gold Solitaire Setting

By Mike Fried,

Hi,

I’m shopping for an engagement ring for my girlfriend that I plan to buy from an online retailer (ie. James Allen). I’ve done a fair amount of research online. My girlfriend fell in love with the platinum classic Tiffany 6 prong round setting with the knife edge so I’m looking for a setting as close to possible to that setting from an online retailer.

In regards to the diamond I’m looking for a round cut diamond that of course sparkles and doesn’t have any major flaws that are visible to the eye. I’m not as concerned with flaws that are only visible under a microscope. My girlfriend is mainly interested in as many carats as possible within budget that doesn’t have any major flaws that are visible to the eye. I’m basically looking for the best value for the diamond without spending money on features you can’t see.

My budget for the diamond is around $20,000 USD. I’m looking forward to working with the team at Diamond Pro and getting the perfect diamond for my soon to be fiance.

The diamonds that you picked look great. I was wondering if you could provide some recommendations that are slightly larger even if I have to pay slightly more. I was thinking in the ballpark of 2.25 – 2.65 carats but still have excellent cuts and recommended by you. I’m willing to go up to $20k – $21k if needed and if you think I will see a difference in the size. Once again I want to pay for features that are recognizable to the eye.

In regards to size where can you see a recognizable difference in size (ie. 2 vs 2.5)? I’ve heard varying opinions and would like to get your opinion.

I noticed that you recommended white gold settings over platinum. Is platinum not worth the expense? Should I spend that savings on the diamond in your opinion?

As for the metal, it’s up to you if you choose platinum or white gold. You’ll need to maintain both metals. As our article says (https://www.diamonds.pro/education/platinum-vs-gold/), the WG has to be dipped every few years and the platinum needs to be polished as well because it scratches. So ultimately, platinum costs you more in the beginning and doesn’t end up saving you any money in the long run. But there is one advantage of platinum – it’s hypoallergenic.

If you compare a 2ct stone with a 2.50ct diamond side by side, there will be some visible difference. But this also depends on how the diamond was cut. Always check the actual measurements when comparing two (or more) diamonds. It’s subjective to say what carat size shows a significant size difference.

Here are some bigger options:

I just have one additional question and one requests. I plan to purchase this week. My question is can your eye visibly tell the difference between the H, I and J color diamonds that you recommended?

Secondly, since it has been a week I was wondering if you could do one more look at diamonds and see if any new diamonds have been added to JA’s inventory that I should consider that fit my qualifications? You nailed my qualifications above which is around $20k, between 2.3 and 2.7 carats that looks great to the eye but not spending extra on the 4C’s that aren’t very visible to the eye and having a preference on larger measurements/carats if the 4C change isn’t very eye visible. I just would like you to do one last check before I pull the trigger on one of the options.

Thanks so much for all of your help. I’m not sure where I would be without your assistance.

I’m having such a tough time narrowing it down to just one ring. My two favorite are:

https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/2.51-carat-j-color-vs2-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-6627380?a_aid=dmnd1357

Out of those two diamonds above which one do you think is the better diamond based on my qualifications and being eye clean?

like this one more: www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/2.57-carat-j-color-vs1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-6253401?a_aid=dmnd1357&chan=ve?a_aid=dmnd1357. It’s larger in measurements and optically, because of the 59% table, will look bigger to the naked eye.

This diamond is an option too: www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/2.70-carat-j-color-si2-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-6644805?a_aid=dmnd1357. It has the same size, however, it has a lower clarity grade. But it would save you some money. Despite it’s an SI2, it should be eye-clean as 95% of twinning wisps are not visible to the naked eye. Worst case scenario, if you end up not liking it, you can easily return it.

I’ll go with the 2.70 carat!

Thanks again!
