Q&A: Help Finding an Emerald Cut Diamond for a Yellow Gold East West Solitaire Setting With a $6,000 Budget

By Mike Fried,

Thinking of purchasing this diamond from Blue Nile, do you think this is a good purchase?

It’s not the worst, but I’m not a huge fan of the black windowing there. It’s fairly prominent.

Id’ go with something like this instead:
Blue Nile LD14539236

It looks much better and has great overall specs.

I like the diamond you sent over, I would love to keep it closer $5,000 I can stretch it closer to $6,000 if needed. Basically what I am looking for is an emerald diamond at least 1 carat, H Color or better, VS 2 or better and a great cut like the one you presented. I just don’t know if it’s better to go higher carat or better color or clarity.

She wants it to go east & west with no other diamonds and a simple yellow gold ring.

I wouldn’t go with a higher color. H is perfectly fine for most settings and putting a higher color grade into a yellow gold solitaire setting would be a waste of money, The metal color will add a slight hue to any diamond so there is no point in paying extra for the higher grades. The same applies to clarity. Once a diamond is eye-clean, it’s simply eye-clean and a higher grade wouldn’t make it “cleaner”. Sure, it always depends on what you find, but I wouldn’t purposely choose a higher clarity grade.

I also found these two (the high clarity grades are just a coincidence):

I didn’t find any decent options between the 1.-1.2ct range.

Of the three you sent, I would go with either the 1.2 or the 1 carat diamond. Is the 1.2 carat diamond noticeably bigger than the 1 carat, do you think it’s worth going bigger? I know you work with other sites, just wondering if saw anything else on another site. Otherwise I am very happy with the options you have presented.

If you look at the real measurements, you can see that all three options are very similar in size. So if I were you, I’d be deciding between the 1.00ct and 1.09ct.

I also found these diamonds on James Allen:

www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/emerald-cut/1.25-carat-h-color-vs1-clarity-sku-9500661?a_aid=dmnd1357 (again, check out the real dimensions and compare them to the other diamonds)
www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/emerald-cut/1.18-carat-g-color-vs2-clarity-sku-8301221?a_aid=dmnd1357

I think I am coming around to the 1.09 ct.

Unfortunately you will have to deal with me a little longer, someone snatched that 1.09 diamond.

No worries, it’s my job to make sure we’ll find something you’ll love, doesn’t matter how long it might take :).

How about this one?
