I am planning on proposing in late October and am beginning my search for a ring – the problem being that I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing!
I am looking to spend around 5k on the diamond and setting combined. I am also looking for a setting with just a single stone.
I was wondering if you could give me some guidance as to what size and quality of diamond I should be trying to get for 5k. I know nothing is an exact science but I would greatly appreciate any help in pointing me in the right direction.
Thanks so much!
The first thing you need to do is decide on a shape. That’s a completely personal choice of style – there’s nothing objective I can tell you!
Thanks so much for the response. I’m currently thinking about a square-cut diamond.
Thanks!
You mean princess cut or asscher cut? Or Cushion? Or square radiant? SOrry to bombard you, but “square” doesn’t limit it so much! Look here:

Click on the different shapes and let me know which one you meant
Thanks for that list. I am definitely leaning towards the Princess cut.
Thanks!

Thank you for this. I’ve been in contact with a wholesaler down here in Tampa and I was wondering if you could let me know what you think about this diamond. It’s a Round Brilliant .92ctw, SI2/G Certified.
It’s GIA Certified with a G color. The polish, symmetry and cut grade are all “excellent”.
The price of this stone is $4,900. I have also attached the video they sent to me of the stone. Is this a reasonable price for the stone?
Thanks so much for your advice! I would have no idea whether or not this was a good price or not without your help.
He’s ripping you off. That video is stock footage and his price is really high. Compare with this:

Wow, thank you so much for this, I never would have known! I hate to continue to barrage you with questions but do you think it would be possible to find a great looking 1ct Round Brilliant for around 5k? If so, is it possible to either go any bigger? I’m moving away from the wholesalers now so I am looking to restart my search!
Thanks!
What kind of setting is it going into?
I’m currently thinking a four-prong Tiffany.
Thanks!
I can’t thank you enough. The diamond looks fantastic and getting it above 1ct is just fantastic.
Thank you much for all you help!
Great! Please let me know what you think once it arrives!
