Q&A: “I’m on the hunt for an engagement ring” — Round Diamond for Contemporary Setting

By Mike Fried,

I’m on the hunt for an engagement ring, common news for you I’m sure. My girlfriend and I like the modern tension settings but recently she expressed interest in something that showed off the diamond more. I found this setting on James Allen as a compromise.

I haven’t been able to find anything equivalent else where which leaves me to find a diamond. Three diamonds I’ve pick out are below. The first is what I believe the best after reading many articles. Second, best value and third best color but that’s probably a waste of money.

I have two questions for you. Have I learned something from your site and am I judging these correctly? Second, you discuss color with the ring metal, what about, as with tension settings, the finger is below?

Thank you for all the help your website has already provided.

I like the I VS2 you selected. There is no point in spending any extra money on the F VS2. If you are ok with a 1/2 carat, go with this diamond:

Thank you for your help Mike. I opted for the I-VS I had picked out earlier as I value the symmetry your G-VS2 was a little short on. I realize it won’t be as important on the ring but being able to see it in the photo was enough to persuade me.

Thanks for writing and letting us know. I’m delighted that you were pleased with our help.

Please let me know how the diamond looks when it arrives.

I am so glad I didn’t order from a company like Blue Nile. As James Allen inspects the diamond and mounts the jewelry they noticed the pavilion had broken. Have you ever heard of this happening before? Could it have something to do with the feather inclusion? Not pleasant news to hear but infinitely better than receiving that diamond. Anyway, their customer service called me (nice not to get such bad news by email, just a great personal touch) and sent me some ideas for alternatives, even going so far as putting her favorite on hold so it wouldn’t get snatched out from under us. Here’s the diamond I’m getting now:

Looks like I have to wait a little longer to get the ring. It’s a good thing she doesn’t know I’ve bought something.

Its rare for this to occur, but it does happen. As you said, a good company keeps on top of things. ‘Stuff’ happens, and its good to see they handle it promptly and professionally.

I like this diamond as well. Keep me posted.
