Thank you for providing such an informative website. I am in the process of looking for an engagement ring and the information provided is invaluable. Having considered several bricks and mortar stores I am inclined to order online due to the price savings.
I am in England therefore James Allen is difficult for me in terms of delivery and import taxes etc although I note that you seem to recommend them. I do travel to the US on business regularly though so it might be an option to collect on one of those occasions or have them deliver to my hotel. The problems with this would be if I had to return the ring for any reason. The other main option for me in the UK is blue nile. I’ve also considered diamond manufacturers – have you come across them? If so do you have a view?
Can you plesae let me have some recommendations for “eye clean” emerald cut diamonds of between 0.7ct and 1.1 ct. My budget for a set ring is likely to be around $5k but could move up or down if there was a good deal available.
1) stay away from diamond manufacturers. They are a terrible company.
2) What type of setting are you planning on? That will affect the color recommendations I’d make.
Many thanks for your email. I really appreciate the advice.
I was planning to get a simple platinum four prong setting – I’m not really sure what the various online retailers offer in terms of that but its probably something along the lines of a classic “tiffany style” setting I’d be looking for.
Thanks for the steer on diamond manufacturers – I’ll keep away from them.
I like this diamond for you:

It’s bright, eye-clean and a great combo. You can use any of the solitaire settings (they just need to change the head on the setting). What do you think?
Thanks – it looks good – as you said it looks to be a nice combo of requirements. The only reservation I have is that I might prefer something with a little higher ratio – closer to 1.5 – but if that’s not possible for my budget then I’ll seriously consider this one.
…….
What is you view each of these? Many thanks for your help.

I would go with the 0.90ct D VS1. Its the best cut/value of the three.
Thanks – one more question – how does the 0.90ct D VS1 referred to below compare to your initial recommendation? Is it definitely eye clean?
1) it’s eye-clean
2) It’s a better value than the 0.97
Many thanks – James Allen’s rep put me off the one below on the basis that it was a bit deeper so wouldn’t “look” as big as its carat size – I have been looking further – what do you think of the diamonds below? The loupe seems to show up some blemishes on the first one but it is listed as IF. The final one would really be pushing it in terms of my budget but I do think it looks very good. Any comments you have on each diamond would be really appreciated.

That F IF is great. Those ‘inclusions’ are just smudged fingerprints.
Many thanks – I see that the F IF has a “thin to very thin” girdle – do you think that is a problem?
Thanks again for all your help.
Not at all.
Thanks Mike
