I am looking for a ring with 3 (smallish) diamonds in a bezel set band. I am thinking of a .20ct and two .12ct. I want as much sparkle as possible, given the size and bezel. Given the relatively small size of the diamonds, can you tell me what the best color, clarity, etc. is for me to search for. I am considering Brian Gavins. Thanks so much!
With diamonds of that size, they won’t be certified. Brian Gavin does great custom jewelry work, and he has the highest quality small stones around. I think you should get in touch with them about building you the ring. Let me know what they quote you!
Thanks! Since they aren’t “certified” does that mean I simply have to trust when they tell you they’re H or VS1, etc.?
Yes, but you can trust BG.
thanks! will let you know what they quote me.
…….
So Ira, here is the quote I received. I would very much appreciate hearing from you about whether there will be a difference in sparkle factor given the size and bezel setting for these diamonds?
For the F/G VS Brian Gavin Signature melee:
For 1 x 0.20 ct and 2 x 0.12 ct set in platinum size 4.5 the price is $2350
If we use H/I SI Brian Gavin Signature melee the prices will be $2150.
I would go for the H/I SI. I’m not sure the difference in quality would be all that noticeable between F/G and H/I. The difference in clarity definitely doesn’t matter.
In my first email exchange with Lesley, she wrote, “All the diamonds that we use in our jewelry are F/G VS Brian Gavin Signature diamonds.” So I was a little surprised in the subsequent email quote that she mentions the H/I SI Brian Gavin Signature. Does that sound peculiar to you? And does the price sound like what you would have expected? I think I’ll go with the H/1, if you don’t think that will compromise the sparkle factor.
Also, if you don’t mind, I have one last question: The difference in cost for platinum vs. white gold is $200. I could go either way. If the main thing that i’d like is as much sparkle as possible, do you have any thoughts on that?
Again, thanks so much for all your help. Do you get commissions from any of the diamond dealers you recommend?
I don’t think it’s weird. She probably just forgot to mention the other option in her first email. I would definitely go with the H/I. I don’t think the difference would be perceptible.
If the difference is only $200, I’d go for the platinum. Gold is really high now in relation to platinum, so it’s a great time to buy platinum.
As for your final question, see this article: https://www.diamonds.pro/truth-about/diamonds-pro/
Hope that clears it up!
Please let me know what you think when the ring arrives!
Thanks again! And thanks for the link. Very interesting.
My pleasure 🙂
I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the ring!
I am in into the process of having Brian Gavin build my ring. (It has three small (.20, .12, .12) bezel set diamonds in a row) I am wondering if you have any knowledge about whether the size of the openings for the diamonds on the inside of the band makes a difference in the sparkle. I’ve noticed that Tiffany seems to use biggish openings for their bezel set diamonds–even when the diamonds are very small. And from the looks of Brian Gavin’s rings online, the openings seem quite a bit smaller. Would love your thoughts before they cast my ring. Thanks!
This really isn’t my specialty. I would trust BGD with what they do. They know much more about jewelry design than I ever will!
Just wanted to follow up and say that I appreciated your Brian Gavin recommendation. I have now received the custom ring they made for me and I am very pleased. I can see that their diamonds are top of the line. I took the ring into Tiffany to compare with a similar one they carry and mine is every bit as sparkly. I am SO picky and I think that Brian Gavin’s custom work is very good, so long as you’re very specific about what you want. They are friendly people, though they may suffer from over-promising on timelines. But their product and prices can’t be beat.
Thanks again for pointing me in their direction.
Thanks so much for this lovely email! I’m sure their untimeliness was mostly due to the flood of Jewish Holidays over the past 2 weeks, but they should have taken that into account and given you realistic dates. Anyway, I’m thrilled you love your ring! Would you mind doing me a small favor? If you could leave us a review on ivouch, we’d be extremely grateful. Here’s a direct link if you have the time:

Thanks!
I wrote the review but didn’t realize I would have to sign up for ivouch in order to publish. I would rather not do that, but here is the review if it is helpful to you:
The Diamond Pro is awesome! I live in Seattle and read the Huffington Post which is how I heard about them. I sent an email asking about the best place to have a ring made similar to a Tiffany ring I liked. The guys at The Diamond Pro recommended Brian Gavin Diamonds in Texas. They also answered specific email questions I had about diamond specs. I have now received the custom ring from Brian Gavin and I am very pleased. I can see that their diamonds are top of the line. I took the custom ring into Tiffany to compare with the one that inspired mine, and mine is every bit as sparkly. I tried it on the finger next to my custom ring. I am SO picky and I think that Brian Gavin’s custom work is very good, so long as you’re very specific about what you want. They are friendly people, though they may suffer from over-promising on timelines. But their product and prices can’t be beat. Thank you The Diamond Pro! Good karma points coming your way!
Thanks again.
