Hello,
I’m looking at getting an engagement ring and have narrowed my search down to a couple options. All of them are using an emerald cut diamond. My girlfriend is quite minimalist and doesn’t like too much going on. She is also into geometric shapes and i think she’d like a simple yet elegant ring.
I’m looking at the Petite Solitaire Engagement Ring in 14k White Gold and 14K White Gold Classic Split Shank Solitaire Diamond Engagement Ring. I would likely go with 14k white gold. Do you know if there’s any reason to go with 18k?
My budget is around $5,000 Canadian for the setting and diamond. For the diamond I’m interested in probably something around 1 ct. in size.
I always recommend 14k gold as it’s cheaper and more durable than 18k (it has more gold in it which makes it softer).
Here’s a couple of beautiful diamonds:

I know there’s still room in your budget, but I didn’t find anything significantly larger or better for the extra $$$. These two have a beautiful cut and no black windowing. Either of them would make an amazing ring.
That is great to know, I will stick with 14k white gold.
Those are beautiful diamonds. Do you think a 0.9 ct will have enough “pop” on a petite solitaire setting from Blue Nile? I think I’m going to stick with Blue Nile because of the shipping and I like that ring setting more. How much more would it be for a good diamond bigger than 1ct?
I’d say that 0.9ct is already quite an impressive size. And solitaire settings are designed to make the diamond stand out so it definitely wouldn’t get “overlooked” 🙂 Also, elongated fancy shapes like emerald, oval and radiant cuts naturally look larger because of the length. Lastly, the 0.90ct I sent over would face up larger because of the way it’s cut. You can see here that it’s basically the same size as a 1ct stone (check out the real dimensions).
Once you hit the 1ct mark, the price jumps up significantly.

Thanks so much! I noticed that the table was quite high for the diamond you sent over, which (correct me if I’m wrong) means that you end up with a bigger looking diamond especially considering the solitaire setting I’m looking at.
Do you know if these diamonds go pretty quick? Like should I be ordering this in the next day or is there not that much turnover. It’s a stunner, so I’m guessing I should act fast?
You are absolutely right. A larger table means that the whole diamond would face up larger.
To be perfectly honest, good diamonds move pretty quickly. So if you are able to pull the trigger now, I’d say go for it before the diamond gets snatched up. But if it did, it wouldn’t be the end of the world, I would, of course, find you a new one.
I ordered that ring with the 0.9 ct diamond you recommended from Blue Nile. Thanks for all the help!
That’s fantastic news!
