Q&A: Looking for the Best Diamond for a 14k White Gold Solitaire Setting

By Mike Fried,

 Hi,
Thank you so very much for the service you provide here. I am beginning my initial process of looking at stones for an engagement ring. I am trying to find either a cushion brilliant or cushion modified brilliant cut stone that will be clean to the naked eye and hopefully in the 1.5-2.0 caret range. I’m not sure if a stone of this size is possible with my 10-12k budget but if it was possible I figured you’d be the person to ask. Thanks for any help you can send my way. The ring will be set in 14K white gold. I do not want any sort of halo so I’m hoping the size of the solitaire can stand on its own. A couple of settings I’m currently considering are:

Thank you for your help!

Hi again, please note that my budget for the stone is now about 8 or 9k
Thanks!

I love this diamond for you:

Its bright, eye-clean and a great value. Its on the edge of your budget, but its a really nice size. What do you think?

I really like that stone as well and I might be able to squeeze it into the budget. If I could trouble you a bit more, if I was wanting a stone for no more than 8k, would you have any recommendations?

Thank you for your time and efforts!

Are you ok with something under 1.50cts?

Yes, I realize getting something of that size for only 8k is probably not possible.

After almost a month of looking and looking for the right setting, I think I’ve found the perfect ring on Brian Gavin’s website. My search, since the last month when we chatted, has actually switched to a round stone. I was searching Brian Gavin’s listing of round diamonds and I came across this one:

https://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamonds/diamond-details/1.514-j-si1-round-diamond-ags-104066185007#a_aid

Is this stone too good to be true? Budget is currently around 10-12k for the stone, going to be a rose gold band, trying to get one of his signature cuts.

Thanks again for all the information and help.

That is a fantastic diamond. It is really good, but it seems to be true 🙂

Let me know how it looks when it arrives.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I called Brian Gavin’s place today and they assured me the stone was eye clean. I’m still amazed I can get one of their signature stones of that size for that price. Is there any characteristic that I’m sacrificing in this stone?

Not that I see. Looks like you got a great deal. Let me know how it looks when it arrives.
