I am searching for a diamond engagement ring. My fiance to be would like a princess cut close to but under 1 carat in size. She also wants brilliant cut diamonds on both shoulders. The exact amount I am not sure, one ring she looked at had 5 diamonds on each shoulder. To me and i might be wrong but its all about symmetry and proportionate sizing to give optimum balance.
My budget for the entire ring including the setting is $5,000 and I am looking for a custom ring design. I do understand clarity, inclusions and colour scale but that’s where it starts to get a bit limited. I understand the cut is also exceptionally important but I cant tell the difference between a good and bad cut without looking at it and seeing the amount of fire it gives out. And I assume the cut is probably one of the most, if not most, important characteristic of a diamond.
Anyway, I would greatly appreciate your help. I can get a good photo of the ring that she likes.
Do you already have someone you are working with on the custom design? Its impossible to pick out a diamond without knowing what the budget is for it.
thanks for getting back to me. In answer to your question, no, I am not working with anyone on a custom design at this stage. I am hoping you can help me out. To make it easy, I have attached a picture of a ring that I wish to copy. As I mentioned in my previous email, I believe the proportionate size of the centre diamond in relation to the other diamonds and band thickness is very important in achieving balance and ultimate beauty. I have 5k budget and wanted the centre diamond to range in size from 0.8 carat to as close as possible to 1 carat without compromising the quality of the centre diamond and similarly, the smaller diamonds on the band. I didn’t want to go past G colour or SI1 for the centre diamond & definitely want one with an excellent cut to ensure it has plenty of fire & sparkle. Best as possible, if you like.
Is this achievable?
Thanks
Out of curiosity, what do you think of this set?
Mike, I like it but the diamonds on the shoulder are smaller than we would like. My fiance has also since decided that she prefers the diamonds on the side to be claw set as opposed to being set in a channel. Sorry for this change. I am confident after our lengthy discussion that this won’t change. I have attached some photos of a setting that she adores & hope this helps.

Can you take a look at this diamond on JA? The item number is 1544579. Its a 0.97ct H color with VS2 clarity. Can you pls have a look at it for me and tell me if you think its a great diamond that will have plenty of brilliance & fire? They want $4,300 for it.
The ring I wish to copy has a 1.01 carat princess cut diamond in the centre which is why I selected this size as its close to that.
I would also greatly appreciate it if you could also have a scout around to see if there are any better options available.

Further to my last email. There is no picture of the diamond on the website that you can look at using their loupe function? Why I’m not sure? Maybe you can get access to a picture as I am only just familiarizing myself to their website.
I have attached a better picture of the ring I am wishing to copy which I hope helps you understand what I am hoping to achieve.
The picture is up now. It looks great to me.
I’m sorry to bother you but can you tell me a little more about the diamond? I know its subjective but is it middle of the road or a very nice diamond that will have tonnes of brilliance and fire? Am I likely to find something better in that price range for that size or is that a great diamond as I really only understand clarity, cut & colour and not all the other characteristics/details mentioned.
That diamond is a great buy.
1) The cut is phenomenal. And because of the lower depth (its on the low end, but still in the ideal range), it will look a bit larger than most diamonds that carat weight. It will also be a very brilliant diamond.
2) Its eye-clean.
3) The price is great. A similar 1.0ct (which, as I explained above, won’t look bigger than this) will cost you 10% higher at least and you are gettingh nothing more for your money.
Great,
Thanks heaps. I hope I can still secure it.
Good luck. Please let me know how it looks when it arrives.
