Q&A: Looking for Round Cut for Pt Solitaire Setting

By Mike Fried,

My boyfriend and I are going to New York the first week of January 2013, and we are thinking of buying an engagement ring before that to collect while we are there. We don’t live in the US, so import tax would normally be high for us, and we want to avoid that! James Allen can ship the ring to New Jersey to avoid the NY tax – so this is the cheapest option for us in terms of tax! I know you guys are the experts, so I would really appreciate your help.

I want the typical solitaire setting in platinum with six prongs. I’ve had a look at James Allen but haven’t decided 100% yet which six prong platinum to pick.

Our budget for the diamond itself is around $5000-6000. I obviously want it to be as big as possible, but for it to still look amazing and clean to the naked eye. I know that cut is very important, and I have read from many of your articles that the colour J is sufficient for the setting/round stone I prefer.

I’ve had a look at James Allen, but I find it hard to tell if it is a nice diamond from the photos.

I would really appreciate your help!

It turns out my boyfriend has also been in contact with you, and he bought a diamond today!! It is 1.23 carat, J S1.

You have been so helpful, I will recommend you to all my friends!

Sounds great. Let me know how it looks when it arrives
