Q&A: Looking for Round Cut for Platinum Solitaire Setting

By Mike Fried,

Great site. I’ve been reading it for the last few days as I start to narrow down may elusive search for the perfect engagement diamond.

I’m looking for a loose diamond, as I chose a really nice solitaire setting at a local jewelry store, and in hopes of getting the best price as well.

I have pretty specific specs, which I’ve settled on after much research. I was initially going to pull the trigger on Blue Nile, but after reading your review, I had second thoughts. I’d love to hear your overall thoughts on the quality of potential diamonds I could find based on the parameters and budget.

Carat: 1.25-1.3 [closer to 1.3 if it’s feasible]
Cut: Ideal
Color: H-G
Clarity: VS2-VS1
Depth: 59.5-61.9
Table: 55-57
Budget is between $8-9k for the diamond only

I am definitely open to adjusting some of the specs to find.

Thanks!

I’d be happy to make some recommendations and guide you through the process. What type of setting are you considering? Yellow gold or white gold/platinum? This may affect the colors that I recommend for the center diamond (as we explain in our post on color).

Let me know and I’d be happy to send you some suggestions.

Sure thing.

I’m looking at a platinum solitaire setting. Thanks so much for your help.

I don’t see any reason to stick with H. Check this diamond out:

I think you get far better value with this one. Its a nice size, perfectly cut, eye-clean and the medium fluorescence lightens it up. It will look great in a solitaire setting.

What do you think?

Thanks so much for the option, it looks really gorgeous and is definitely what I am looking for. I assume that there is really no difference between H and I color?

From what I’ve heard from jeweler’s, after cut, color is most important and to sacrifice size for better quality color.

Though seems to be a moot point if its barely noticeable by eye. Do you think a 1.2 and a H/G may be a better option?

…….

Thanks so much for your help.

I did a little investigation on James Allen

And I think I’ve narrowed it down to a few options. How do you like these? Any one in particular you like?

Thanks!

I would go with that 1.35 I VS2. We strongly disagree with that jeweler. As we say on our color post, J+ is fine. To be safe, you can go with I. But there is no need to go higher than that with a solitaire setting. FYI Tiffany & Co generally uses HI color diamonds.
