Q&A: Need Help Finding 1 Carat Round Diamond on James Allen

By Mike Fried,

First of all thank you for your website. it is very interesting information and easy to understand.

I am looking for an engagement ring with a 1 carat diamond.

At the beginning i found things around 6~7K USD (ring included) with E/VSI grades but it was with the EGL lab. based on your information i gave up this idea.

Now when i look at equivalent products with AGI certificat, prices are going up very significantly.

I took into account your comment for the color, so i think i can take G/VS1.

I looked at VS2 products on jamesallen website but don t feel comfortable going with that (big mark visible). and sometime the price gap doesn’t make much sense.

I saw this one on Jamesallen website and i have requested the magnified picture to look at it.

I have to admit that the price is far over my original budget but is it what i should consider to pay for this type of diamond?

https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1378202.asp

To summarize, i was looking at :

1 carat

G color grade min

VS1 clarity (VS2??? i don t know)

very good cut polish symetry

I don t know if i am looking for too much and what is the reasonnable.

thanks and best regards

xxx

PS: for the ring … i have to agree with your comment that jamesallen doesn’t have much nice models on its website.

Thanks for writing! There’s really no need to go for a VS1. 95% of VS2s in a 1 ct round stone will be clean to the naked eye. I don’t like the stone you linked to because it only has a VG cut. You’ll be better off sticking with EX. Here are some nice options for you:

https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1376946.asp – this is an SI1, but eye clean for sure. At EGL, this would probably be an E VS1.

Let me know what you think!

thanks for your quick answer.

I would like to clarify something to make sure i have clear understanding.

you say that you don t like the one i send because it only has a VG cut.

https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1378202.asp

however that one has ideal cut / excellent polish / very good symetry

the 2 others your recommend

https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1338363.asp

this one is ideal everywhere

https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1376946.asp

this one is same as the one i found ie ideal cut / excellent polish / very good symmetry

i m not sure to understand which parameter is not good and i should pay attention at? can you please help to clarify?

thanks in advance for your answer.

Cut grade – its the only one that matters.

So the one i sent you should be OK too then 🙂

Many thanks for your recommendations.

No, Cut was VG on that stone.  No reason not to get EX. It’ll make a noticeable difference.

ideal is better than EX?

Open up the GIA certificate

oh i got it! :-)i just read the information on the webpage and it is written ideal. not same as the GIA report.thanks

……

i know that it may be in my mind but i have hesitation buying lower grade diamond for the engagement ring 🙂 the magnified picture shows so much defect. it s kind of scary if you see what i mean.

but the price gap is really giving me doubt!

the G/SI1 diamond you recommended from James Allen is at 7310 USD

https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1376946.asp

looking at Bluenile, the following G/VS1 is at 8700 USD

Blue Nile LD02062404

or that one even better grade but more expensive 9200 USD

https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1378692.asp

or that one

https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1278801.asp

may i ask you opinion about these?

is there a risk to buy G/VS1 without seeing it? (in the case of Bluenile)?

I wouldn’t recommend that BN stone because the table is a bit large at 61%.

If you want something cleaner, I would go for something like this, it’s a much better value:

https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1315157.asp

thanks so much for your answer and advice.

I didn’t expect diamond to be that complicated before i start looking at it 🙂 … I learn with every email.

H color is not getting a bit yellowish?

would you recommend the H/VS2 rather than the F/VS1 at 9200 USD?

You wouldn’t be able to tell the difference with your eye between an F and an H. It looks completely white.

so if i understand well, even if i can afford the  F/VS1 EXCELLENT cut, you could recommend me the H/VS2 Heart and Arrow?
https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1378692.asp

i m having internal debate on price and quality 🙂
in both cases it is a lot of money and i want to give something very special to my girl 🙂

Yes, that’s correct. The H VS2 is a much better buy. It’s more brilliant and very noticeably larger. The only thing the F/VS1 has over the HVS2 in terms of what might be noticeable is the color, but 2 color grades aren’t really distinguishable when the stone is set in a ring.

too bad i wanted to buy today but the H-VS2 you recommended but it is gone 🙁

I called James Allen and i asked to book 3 diamonds. Since i am not really sure i would like to ask once more for your kind advice 🙂

I booked

1 carat F/VS1 Excellent cut : 9200 USD (this is in case but i don t think you will recommend that one 🙂 )

https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1378692.asp

1.08 carat H/VS2 True Heart : 8420 USD

https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1354957.asp

1.12 carat H/VS2 True Heart : 9220 USD

https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1380138.asp

when talking with the lady on the phone, she strongly recommended me to go for True Heart rather than the F/VS1.

would you mind having a last look and telling me what you think about these or any other you find on the website?

i saw these others …

https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1360517.asp

https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1344947.asp

sorry to bother so much with my purchase …

thank you very much again for your help.

I think your best bet is the 1.08 H VS2.  It wont’ be any noticeably smaller than the 1.12 and it’s cheaper than the 1.06 G VS2 (and they’d look identical, anyway).

Thanks so much ira. Really appreciate.

Last question … There was 2 G/VS2

I booked one but there is an other one similar.

Do you see any difference? Do you have any Preference? Or both are fine?

Thanks so much again

……

I mean 2 H/VS2 1.08C … 🙂

Any preference?

Nope! Flip a coin!

Thank you so much.

I will do my purchase tomorrow

Thanks again

……
