Q&A: Princess Cut Vs. Round Cut

By Mike Fried,

I am hoping you can help me locate the best Princess Cut diamond for this engagement ring:

https://www.jamesallen.com/faq/engagement-rings/channel-set/platinum-0.60ct-channel-set-princess-shaped-engagement-ring-item-789?a_aid=dmnd1357

My budget is about $15K, which leaves around $12,700 for the diamond (I could go up a bit if necessary, but not sure it would be worth it). I would like the largest eye clean diamond I can get. After reading through your site, I thought this one looked like a good bet:

Please let me know if you like this one, or if you have any other recommendations in my price range. Really appreciate the help.

Thanks!

It seems like you have this diamond buying process down pat. I love the diamond you selected. It will look great with that setting.

Let me know how it looks when it arrives.

Thank you for the reply. I have learned so much from your site.

I have been wavering a bit on the cut of the diamond – and am now leaning towards a round. I haven’t had as much luck trying to find the perfect round in my budget (I was proud of the Princess cut I found). Any chance you could toss out some recommendations for me? I know rounds are a little pricier, and I could stretch my budget up to $15K for the diamond if necessary.

If you stop focusing on weight, a round diamond is far more affordable. A 1.50ct round will look much bigger than a 1.75 (or even 2.0ct) princess. https://www.diamonds.pro/education/carat-weight/

They are also far better at ‘hiding’ inclusions. If an inclusion is on the edge of a round, its great. You can cover it up with a prong and it will be 100% eye-clean. If a PC has an inclusion on the corner, it increases the risk of the corner chipping off. Here is a perfect example:

It’s a fantastic value. The inclusion is barely visible as it is, and it will be completely invisible once you put a prong there.

What do you think?

You’re right – I have been hung up on getting the largest diamond possible. I hadn’t really considered that a 1.5ct round would look larger than a 2ct princess cut. I think this pushes me towards the round even more.

The above diamond is right in my budget. It seems like there are a lot of inclusions, but if your point about the prong hiding them is true (which I’m sure it is!), it seems like a great value. Is the diamond you referenced the one you would go with (or just an example of one with the inclusion on the edge)?

Thanks again!

That is the diamond I would go with.

In what is likely a classic guy move, I have delayed my proposal, and now the diamond that we had picked out has been purchased. Wondering if you could take a look at the following and let me know your thoughts:

I’m pretty sold on this setting:

My diamond budget is about $13,500. What do you think of the above? Any others that you would recommend?

Thank you for the help. Sorry to come back and ask you to look a second time!

That looks fantastic.
