Q&A: Questions about Eye-clean, Fluorescence, and Yellow Color

By Mike Fried,

Hi I love your website! It is so informative. I was thinking of purchasing the 1st link below. I am worried about the color though. I am worried it might look too yellow or not bright enough.

I think the medium fluorescence will help it slightly but was wondering would it be better to get strong fluorescence to improve the color more. What would you advise. I am also worried about the inclusions being visible to the naked eye.

My budget is around 6000 or up to 6700 including ring. I would like to get the best value for my money. A round diamond, looks really bright and good value for the money. I don’t want to pay extra for something to look good under a microscope.

Thanks so much

Thanks for the kind words! I think the first one you picked is awesome – as long as you’re setting it in a solitaire. I would definitely go for it.

I think it is awesome too. I just showed my boyfriend and he pointed out a black mark near the middle. If that is obvious to the human eye I wonder if it would always annoy me. I think it is a great diamond. Do you think that that mark would be noticeable to the human eye? Thanks so much for your time and advice! I really do appreciate it. It is quite a daunting experience getting a diamond.

Thanks again

That spot is too small to be visible to the naked eye. This is another option:

I still think your stone is a better value, however.

Here’s one more option:

https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-SI1-Excellent-Cut-Round-Diamond-1462091.asp

But again, your original stone still seems to be a better value.

Let me know what you think of those!

Those ones you sent me are good but I think you are right that if I can’t see the spot that the one I picked is better value. Let me ask you something. I noticed that when my boyfriend and I went to jewelry stores that I liked G and H colors a lot and anything that was I color and above we liked. The reason why I started looking at J colors was because with flourescense I thought it might make it lighter and we could get something bigger. I know this is a personal choice but given what I told you do you think that I’d be better going with a 1 carat higher color or getting a bigger J color with florescence. The 5 options we are thinking of right now are the following

1) Original one I picked that you liked.

2) https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-SI1-Excellent-Cut-Round-Diamond-1516373.asp

3) https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-SI1-Excellent-Cut-Round-Diamond-1516376.asp

4) https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1517622.asp

5) https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI1-Excellent-Cut-Round-Diamond-1513971.asp

The following is what we are looking for in a nutshell:

Something that looks as big as possible, eye clean without sacrificing too much on quality. We don’t care how it looks under the microscope just how it looks in person and we do want to get good value also but not at the expense of people thinking the diamond looks yellow or if they notice inclusions. We really don’t like the yellow look.

His budget including a ring is maximum 6500, now if there was something breathtaking he might go to 7000 but again he’d prefer to keep the max at 6500. Do you think we would be better of buying online or do you think you could help us better diamond for that price? We would want Gia certifications only. Btw we were initially looking at Blue Nile and were about to purchase a diamond there until we read your review of them so that has really helped us. We were also looking at White Flash. We really like the loop to examine diamonds on James Allen website. Let me know if you still think that number 1 is the best or something else on the list and/or if you think you can help me get a better deal.

Let me know and thank you so much for your help! We truly appreciate it!

Definitely buying online is your best bet. We’re not big fans of Whiteflash as we’ve had some less than stellar experiences with them. If you want to spend the extra money to get a super-ideal Hearts & Arrows cut, then I would recommend Brian Gavin. We’re big fans of theirs. They also happen to have a H&A collection called Brian Gavin blue which basically consists of stones that have strong fluorescence that have no negative effects from the fluorescence. Their inventory is a bit weak now, so this is all they have that would fit your budget:

The VS1 kind of makes it needlessly more expensive.

As for the stones on JA, I like the J SI1. I like the larger size, and I dont’ think it’s worth it to upgrade to the I SI1.

Let me know what you think of the BGD stone, btw.

Wow, that diamond looks breath taking no doubt! I am just worried about paying so much for a florescence diamond, I know there are no negative effects with this diamond, that the florescence is already tested out which is great, but it is really tough deciding between the first one that I sent you from the James allen site and this one. The first one I sent you is cheaper and bigger but this one looks nicer and has less inclusions although again if it isn’t obvious to the naked eye that doesn’t matter to me. This is a tough decision. I will go home later and discuss it with my boyfriend.

Good to know about whiteflash. Let me think more about Brian Gavin as they seem to have really high quality diamonds. I will keep you up to date on what we end up deciding.

Thanks again for your help!. Let me know if I can give you an excellent review somewhere as I really appreciate all of the advice.

Sounds great! Let me know what you decide. I’d love to have an review – but lets wait until you get the stone and you’re happy with it!

I think I found the one but wanted to check with you on your professional opinion of whether the inclusion would be obvious to people. They said that they could partially cover it with as prong. Let me know your thoughts on this one

I was thinking of getting this setting with it.

Thanks so much

That stone looks great!

I agree! I think it is a great deal. I am so so excited. Do you think that ring the channel setting will be good with it or would you get a plain solitaire. The diamond is an H. That is the one. I’ve got goosebumps just thinking about it.

…….

Sorry I’m sending you so many emails. It’s just I’m so excited. The only thing is this brings us out of our price range but I think this one might knock that other one out of the ball park, remember the one I sent you before that you liked. Do you think that this one is a good deal even though it is more expensive than the other one I sent you the other day.

Thanks so much,

That’s totally a personal decision. You and I could have very different tastes!
