Q&A: Second Opinion on Purchased Diamond Studs

i just purchased a pair of 1.2tcw, H color, VSI2 diamond studs set in 18K white gold standard setting for $4560 at an Off Saks Outlet store. I have since discovered your website which is great. I am obsessing on whether I got a good pair of studs. The original price was $8900…which is obviously very high. I have gone on the James Allen site and can find very similar earrings for about the same price i paid (comforting). However, I don’t know the cut of the Roberto Coin or the table/depth ratio. I have tried to measure but….hmmmm….tough!

I want the fire. I like the size. I am fine with color and clarity. I think they are pretty but I am not confident in my decision that they are sparkling enough. Do you have an opinion on the quality and cut of Roberto Coin?
I could order the James allen diamond and compare and then send one back (either Saks or Allen). But, for some reason that makes me nervous!

I am not sure about your recommendation. The total cost is $5855 for the James allen – I paid $4560 for Roberto Coin’s (both earrings!). Am I misunderstanding?

The Roberto Coin are H color and VS2. I figured after checking bunches of sites it wasn’t that bad of a price.

I ordered a pair from James Allen. Didn’t want to bother you again (but wish i had kinda of). I probably should have gone up in size. However, a year of so ago, I looked at diamonds at a jewelers and to my mind and eye liked the higher color of F or G….so…
Spoke with rep and here is what I ordered.
I had some reservation just because these were a “pair” and that made me a bit concerned (one good, one not so good? or really a good match?).
What do you think about “matching” pairs offered?

I worried about the feather in the 1st diamond but they said not to worry. There is a cluster of freckles in the second and one small one in the middle (sort of) that also concerned me a bit.

Because of tax, (here in TN close to 10%), I am really paying about the same for better quality. I am hoping these have more fire. The R. C’s have sparkle but not a lot of fire.
I will compare and see.

They have a new site which is amazing. It’s in beta now and they sent it to me. If you haven’t seen it, you should. You can really see what you are buying. I think it would make me feel more confident. But, ultimately, it’s really hard to compare like on the video where the lower quality diamond is the one that everyone chooses as the best.

Part of me wishes I had gone with your rec for a bit bigger and paid more…

I received the James Allen studs and they are wonderful. I compared with Roberto Coin and the Coin wasn’t bad at all. I don’t know the cut of the Coin diamonds. I think (feel?) that the JA have more fire. The Coin sparkle but don’t really throw off the flashes of color I love. The JA do. Is it possible for a diamond to have sparkle but little fire?

Because the JA are an F and Coin are H color, the JA seem whiter to me but not by much. However, in some light the whiteness was more evident to me. I could go with a G color for sure.

I also like knowing that the diamonds are high enough quality to be used in a ring if i want or if my daughter wants to reset them when I am long gone!

I returned the roberto coin.

All this is very subjective of course. I saw a woman the other day wearing large studs. But, they looked dull and dirty to me. Maybe they just needed to be cleaned, who knows, but I hate that look. Like Oscar Wilde, I am easy to satisfy, I just like the best. So, I may play mind tricks with my eyes but I am happy with the brilliance, scintillation, and overall look of these studs!

As for size…I think they are just fine. I would prefer the larger .7 (even up to .75) but I just don’t think my budget allows. One of the diamonds you choose is (once again) gone to another customer. You are good! I looked on the Gavin site and found some but it seems I need another $800 to get what I want. I think $5000 is income appropriate for me, haha!

After living with my earrings for a couple of weeks, I think I would like to see what I can get in approx. .7 (1.4 tcw). I really like these and would rather keep my F, VS2 .6 (1.2tcw) rather than go down in look. I love, love, love the fire. Table seems to be a big thing with me?

Also, could do G color?
Can you recommend a few choices. I don’t want flourescent. Don’t like black spec on table even if you probably won’t see it anyway. I’ll know it’s there.
Would like to stay 6100-6500.

I don’t think you have rec on settings on your site. I am (got) the 3 prone martini, white gold. I don’t like when the basket earring kind of sticks out. Is there any other consideration besides personal preference?

My earrings were delayed because of casting. But, they finally arrived last Sat. I love ’em! The size is perfect; I’m so glad I went that slight bit bigger. They have a lot of sparkle and fire. Thanks so much for helping me!
