Q&A: Seeking Ideal Princess Cut Diamond for $6K Budget

Big fan of you and your site. I’ve been looking on and off for a diamond for a while now. I thought I wanted to buy her something around the 1.25 range but when I looked at one in person it was just too big for her finger. Now I think I want to find something in the under 1 carat category but without sacrificing quality.

I found this one on adiamor and I really think it would be perfect. What do you think? I like the tiffany setting by the way. My budget is a little over 6K for a perfect diamond.

Thanks for getting back to me Ira. I did read your article a while ago but I guess I just looked at this one and thought it looked good and wouldn’t have any problems with it since there isn’t a way to see it for myself beforehand. I re-read your article and it seems that I really didn’t follow any of your guidelines! I just moved the slide bar thingy until I found the highest quality for the price point I was willing to spend. I do know that the band I want to get would be around $1,200 so then my max price point would be about $5,200 or less for the diamond alone. I really want something high quality above all else.

Couple questions: Does James Allen have a retail store in Chicago? I live in Chicago so would I have to pay sales tax for my purchase? I’m leaning toward either a pave or solitaire setting…any advice on either of those?

Great news! I just got the diamond today! It is gorgeous and the perfect size! Now I am going to get it independently appraised and then get it set. I did click on your site to get on to james allen but I sent you my order number just in case. I can’t thank you enough for all of your help and guidance. I was really pretty clueless. The folks at James Allen have been wonderful. And with the money you saved me on the stone I can go ahead and get a better setting and hopefully give her a big surprise! You’re the best! Just got my diamond independently appraised and he graded it a VS2! He did say that the color was more like an F than an E though but he wasn’t worried about it. All in all he said I got a good deal! I’m getting pretty tired of walking around with it thinking I’m gonna get mugged, so I’ll be glad when I get it set. I put in a good word for you on ivouch and did the click thing you wanted me to do. I’ll let you know when I get the ring and when I pop the question. Have a great weekend!
