Hi,
I’m looking to upgrade the pear stone in my ring with Blue Nile. The stone I have currently is a 0.53ct pear (G/VS1/no fluorescence) and has a large face up size given its ct wt. I would like to upgrade – ideally I wanted a 1ct but realistically I think I’ll need to go for something a bit smaller given my budget ($4,500-$5,000). I would ideally like something bright and sparkly with no bow tie effect and as large a face up size per carat as I can get (doesn’t everyone?!). I like the longer pear shapes (1.6 l/w ratio and higher) and my questions are …
– should I worry about fluorescence?
– what is the minimum colour I can ‘get away with? It’s going to be set in a white gold setting with three very small accent diamonds either side
– is there any way I can tell what diamonds have a strong bow tie look? Can you tell this from the 360 images from the Blue Nile site (I think I can from some of them!)?
You can go for H+ color. Since there is basically no visible difference between a G and H, you can find many more options with H. If it’s an H color, the fluorescence can be none, faint or medium. If it’s G and higher in color, the fluorescence should stay either none or faint.
The bowtie can definitely be visible in the 360` images. Just view the diamonds from all angles and make sure you can’t see any significant black spots. I found this beautiful 1.02ct pear that doesn’t have a visible bowtie and has great measurements:
Blue Nile LD13370306
Take a look at it and let me know what you think.
Thanks so much for getting back to me and for your help. The diamond you suggested was already on my list of potential options. The only thing that put my off it was that it was a “good” cut and I was worried it wouldn’t look as brilliant.
Here are the others I was considering:
Blue Nile LD11296697
Blue Nile LD13652109
Blue Nile LD14119241
Don’t look at the cut grades. GIA doesn’t give cut grades to pears because it’s not that easy to determine. What you’re seeing on Blue Nile is their own marking which isn’t relevant. If it was a diamond for me, I’d go with the 1.02ct H/VS2.
As for the three you sent me, I don’t like the bowtie on the last two. The first one is nice, but you’re spending the same money for something smaller. Overall, the least visible bowtie is on the one I sent you. And I wouldn’t recommend a diamond with bad proportions and brilliance.
Brilliant. Thank you. I think I will go for this one. Thanks for the advice it’s much appreciated!
My pleasure.
